Atlantic bridge 20211/30/2024 ![]() Speakers included Grace-Marie Turner of the Galen Institute, Timothy Morris of GlaxoSmithKline and Peter Farrow of Pfizer. In 2003, when Fox was Shadow Secretary for Health, he also chaired a conference on "scientific research and medical provision". This included meetings with John Ashcroft and Karl Rove and the presentation of awards to Rudy Giuliani and Henry Kissinger. Its work largely consisted of uniting British and American Conservatives and foreign policy hawks. In discussion with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Fox claimed that the think tank was intended to "bring people together who have common interests and recognise that. It was dissolved in September 2011, following a critical report from the Charity Commission the previous year. The organisation's principal staff included Catherine Bray (US Executive Director), Adam Werritty (UK Executive Director) and Kara Watt (Operations Director). Have previously sat on its advisory panel, as have American senators Jon Kyl, Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman. Cabinet ministers Michael Gove, George Osborne and William Hague, and Chris Grayling It was set up by Liam Fox, former Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom. Too much is at risk here to allow this pipeline to go forward. The Atlantic Bridge Research and Education Scheme was an educational charity founded in 1997 with Margaret Thatcher as its president to promote Atlanticism, an ideology of cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States regarding political, economic, and defence issues. It would also cross three drinking water supply systems that supply all of New York City with drinking water. And the effect of these three projects is greater than the sum of its parts-while the effects of a single pipeline crossing a water body may be reversible, multiple pipeline crossings can have long-term and irreversible impacts on water quality and riparian life.Īltogether, the Algonquin Pipeline Expansion Project would add over 165 miles of new natural gas pipeline, cross 349 water bodies, harm more than 300 acres of wetlands, and over 950 acres of forest. DEC must evaluate Atlantic Bridge in the context of these two other related projects-indeed, DEC is mandated by statute to take into account the cumulative impacts of the entire project when evaluating whether the project should get 401 certification. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation should find that the sponsors of the pipeline, Algonquin Gas Transmission and Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, have failed to show that Atlantic Bridge would comply with state water quality standards.Īs mentioned earlier, however, the Atlantic Bridge Project is just one segment of the larger Algonquin Pipeline Expansion Project, which also includes the Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline and the Access Northeast pipeline. If the applicants of the pipeline fail to show that it will meet state water quality standards, states must deny certification to the pipeline, and the pipeline can’t go forward in that state. ![]() Under Section 401 of the Clean Water Act, states have the power to issue or deny certification (“401 certification”) to natural gas pipelines that are sited within their borders. Any impact to water quality from this proposed pipeline has the potential to impair the drinking water supply of millions of New Yorkers. The entire project is sited to be built within the Hudson River watershed and New York City drinking water supply watershed, which provides drinking water to over 8 million residents of the City and surrounding areas. In New York State alone, the pipeline would directly harm 21 streams (3 of which are protected trout streams), 11 acres of forests, and over 10 acres of wetlands in the state. The Atlantic Bridge is a serious threat to water quality, wildlife, trout streams, and other habitats, as well as to air quality in the Hudson Valley region of New York.
